THE PORTHOLE STORY |

Back in November 2007, on a dark and gloomy Wednesday afternoon at the bowling alley, Paul's germ of an idea was watered and fed by Jamie, Liz, Graham, and Karen. “What about setting up a newspaper for the yotties?”. Sounded like a good idea. Excited voices were throwing in suggestions left, right and centre, “I'll write a horoscope,” “let's have a crossword”, “we need lots of photos” “it's gotta be funny”... and so it started. Gordon was the final recruit and it has to be said that his contributions to the rum fund along with his flashes of inspiration have kept us all going. Karen, after a lot of discussion, came up with the name. Jamie stepped up to the mark and spent hours learning how to typeset. Liz and Graham, with no previous experience but with lots of arrogance, plunged into editing. Attempts at proofing ended up with the paper being nicknamed “The Pothole”. Paul sat back and watched with glee as “his team” came up with each edition. By luck or by skill he also contributed a little bit of genius to every issue. In the early days we were anonymous. Having been labelled as “cliquey” in the past we didn't want everyone to think “oh no, it's them again”. Owing to our faulty market research we printed 450 copies of the first issue, so if you'd like one please email The Porthole! The first issue was small, invented by the editors and tagged a “Rag Mag” by some of our readers. We quickly realized that for the paper to be interesting we needed to include more “meat” and thus was born the concept of “Through The Porthole”, our most popular feature. We approached some of our fellow liveaboards for their stories, concentrating on characters who might not be as well known as others.
