Make sure your antivirus software is updated regularly (normally everyday). Look after your PC and you won't need to take it to hospital for an expensive 'procedure'. Q. I’m using Windows 98 and some programs I want to install simply won’t. What should I do? Technology has moved on so far Win98 simply can’t cope. It is also much more vulnerable to viruses etc, and Microsoft no longer provides updates. Microsoft normally drop support for an operating system about a year after its replacement has been launched. Microsoft will drop support for Windows 2000 SP3 this summer but will support SP4 until 2010. To us that means software updates will only be available until then. A new laptop with DVD burner, wide screen and WiFi for around €500 makes it hard to say no. Q. The three month free trial has just expired on my anti virus software, should I pay or install something else? How do you decide on which is the best for you. What is not commonly known is that anti virus vendors share information about the inner workings of viruses and other threats. Because of this a solution is generally available for download long before a virus becomes a threat. Try to find one that also provides protection from malware and spyware, as these can often be more annoying to the user than a virus. Regularly update your anti virus, once a day is not |

too often. Beware, in our community the most probable method of contracting a virus is by memory sticks. In the last few weeks both the two foreign sticks I inserted in my machine carried viruses. Most viruses these days are not designed to cripple your machine, more likely to collect personal information and then send it without your knowledge to someone wanting to steal from you. Q. I have just bought a new computer with Windows Vista and want to connect to my GPS for navigation. Tests with various serial to USB adaptors that work perfectly on a range of XP machines simply did not work with Vista. It appears Vista has some serious USB issues to sort out. Consider buying a more up to date adaptor with Vista drivers. Q. Why is the marina blocking my computer? It isn't and doesn't. Many have noticed that the WiFi system has improved over the last couple of weeks. The marina has made some changes and integrated faster hardware. It is interesting to see more people install simple, inexpensive but effective on board WiFi antenna systems and reporting greatly improved access. These will prove their worth in the bays where connection is possible but the aerial distant. |
