REMOVING RAIN SPOTS FROM FRESH VARNISH

Peter of 'Alexina of Shoreham'

...and just in case the weatherman got his forecast wrong...

This quick and easy to follow process permanently removes pesky rain spots from your freshly applied varnish. No more dodgy weather forecast misery, just follow these few easy steps to restore the glory of your woodwork.

Take an indelible marker pen and carefully transcribe a circle around each rain spot. Once you have identified each blemish draw, in the indelible pen, a circle to include all the previously drawn circles.

Using a dry paintbrush and a proprietary varnish remover such as Nitromors, paint a thick coat over the entire area enclosed by the circle. Allow the preparation to work until the varnish is raised in a thick, crinkly crud. With a broad spatula lift off the residue and carefully dispose of this in an approved receptacle for hazardous waste. Take a clean, lint free cloth, wet with a little water and wipe down the treated area, rinse the cloth as appropriate and do not fear to use a fresh cloth. The objective is to remove every trace of the varnish.

Carefully rub down the surface with garnet paper. Using a good quality brush apply a thin layer of varnish and white spirit mixed 50/50. When dry repeat with a layer of 60/40, followed by a 75/25. Leave for 24 hours and flat back with a 1200 grade

wet/dry paper. Clean with lint free cloth and then apply two further layers 75/25. Leave for 24 hours and then flat again with 1200 grade wet and dry.

Clean with a lint free cloth and then apply a layer of 100% varnish. Leave for 24 hours and apply a further coat of 100% varnish. Flat back with 1200 grade wet/dry and apply a final coat of 100% varnish. Sit back and admire your excellent results
