GORDON’S FISHING TIPSGordon of ‘Rama’ |

Spring is on the way and once again our thoughts turn to cruising. What finer way to make your day complete than to lunch on a freshly caught fish?
This article will not guarantee a catch but should point you in the right direction. Complicated equipment is not necessary and could prove a hindrance on a small boat under sail. A hand line streamed 25 meters astern is quite sufficient given the correct lure. My lure of choice is the “RAPALA” (see pictured). This is a high tec piece of equipment designed to imitate the movement and vibrations of bait fish. There are other similar lures available at far less cost nowadays, among them YO-ZURI and ALBA. Provided they have the same basic design i.e. a |

scoop on the nose to make it dive and vibrate, there is little to choose between them. These are all available at local tackle shops in Marmaris. The knot to attach them to the line is most important. Check out this site for more knots www.animatedknots.com/
Speed of the boat is not important as long as the lure is active. I have caught fish at speeds between 3 and 12 knots. Tuna especially are very quick and predatory, other fish to look for are Dorado, Barracuda and the very occasional Swordfish. The prime areas to look for fish are when passing over banks and other underwater features. These can often be seen as smooth patches of sea where there is an up-welling of water which fish use to bring food to them. Sometimes a very slight |

change of course can provide a welcome meal.
Remember to keep a bucket or plastic bag handy to put your catch in, and to retrieve your gear before manoeuvring. Good luck and bon apetit.
