Istanbul Boat Show |
|
20th - 23rd February On Wednesday the 20th February a group of us will depart Yacht Marina heading for Istanbul and the Boat Show. We will be travelling in luxury coaches provided by the marina. It’s a long trip but will stop for breaks and a restaurant en route for a lunch.
For the 3 nights we will stay in a variety of discounted hotels. On the 21st we are chauffeured to the boat show as guests of the marina wearing our complimentary marina jackets and, in between browsing the many attractions, we can return to our ‘home from home” the marina stand for food, drink and live music. In the evening there will be a dinner cruise on the Bosphorus with music, food and drinks. For those who have been to the boat show with the |

marina before you will know how good this evening will be. The next day is free for sightseeing in Istanbul. The following day, Saturday, we will be returning to the marina. Apart from a contribution to the cost of the fuel and the hotel bills, all the entertainment is provided by the marina. The main hotel used by the marina is the Side Hotel and when booking please tell them you are with the Yacht Marina Party or they will tell you it is full. www.sidehotel.com

AIS — The Truth |

|
Talk of the town recently has been the AIS issue and whether us yotties are obliged to install them on our boats. The Porthole is in possession of the OFFICIAL document (number 26640) that was published by the Turkish government on the 11th September, 2007, and issued to the Chamber of Shipping, the harbour master and the coastguard. It states:
- Currently all commercial Turkish flagged vessels must have the Class B AIS installed.
- As of March 2009 all commercial foreign flagged vessels over 10m must oblige.
- The document specifically states that all charter boats and sailing school boats over 10m must have the unit installed by March 2009.
- However, this does NOT currently apply to any privately owned yacht of any size and we are not obliged to install a Class B unit by the 2009 deadline.
The official document will be available from the marina office. |

People’s Navy A Security Threat! |
|
Many of us will remember The People's Navy and the website (www.peoplesnavy.com) that follows the progress of Sam of 'Cindik' and his father, Pete, of 'Musichana'. Well it seems we've kicked up quite a storm with the British authorities who refused Pete a BIOT mooring visa on the grounds that he would be a threat to security. An article on the site, written by a freelance journalist, suggested that the two boats would be taking on the American Navy by visiting Diego Garcia. This is not true of course as Pete and Sam are sailing to the Salomon and Peros Banhos islands to raise awareness for the Chagos people. However we have since removed the article and Pete was finally granted his visa last week, plus a bill for £50 for the administration involved! It's clear The People's Navy is making headline news in more ways than one…but that was the whole point. A 40ft wooden boat a threat to security? Who are you calling paranoid? |
