This is the first issue of a new fortnightly semi-broadsheet newspaper which has been put together by a few like-minded yotties in Yacht Marina.

We will continue to print for as long as you want us to. We will always try to bring you something new and interesting but remember, this is your voice and to be heard, we ask that you speak up and join in.

If you have an opinion, tell us. Send us your “letters to the editor” and questions to “Dear Dottie”. We are happy to publish correspondence anonymously, but (like any publication) we ask that you make yourself known to us in any communication, discretion is guaranteed. We also encourage you to send in any news pieces or items of interest.

We will gauge your interest by the reaction we receive.

Inside these pages, along with

news items, letters and a place to air your views, you will find jokes, a crossword, recipes, confessions and lots more. We welcome ideas from everyone. Do we have any cartoonists out there?

We would like to extend Kids Corner in the next issue and are looking for a coordinator. We don't know who that will be yet, so please help us to choose by supplying nominations. A good kids corner could easily grow into a whole kids page, with your help.

To cover costs we will charge 1 ytl per copy, with any surplus going to charity. We will split the money between the marina charity, Ozel Olimpyatla, and the cats fund which keeps the marina's cats healthy and under control, which in turn keeps your boats free from rats, mice and, hopefully, cockroaches.

So, now it's up to you. Get emailing!

Kurban Bayrami

Festival of Sacrifice 20th –23rd December

Kurban Bayram is a sacrifice of a farm animal and for each adult Muslim wealthy enough it is considered a sin not to observe this rule.  The foundation of this sacrifice goes back to the prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) who was tested by God to prove the strength of his faith.  He was asked by God to sacrifice his son Ismail. Ibrahim told his son, who later also became a prophet, to die for God.  Ibrahim took Ismail to mount Mina near Mecca to perform the sacrifice, however, before the sacrifice could take place God sent a goat with his angel Gabriel and told Ibrahim that he had proved his loyalty and to sacrifice the goat instead.  Since that day the offer of sacrifice to God is performed by followers of the prophet Ibrahim.

The meat from the animal is then, by Islamic custom, divided into three parts.  The first to the household, the second to family and friends and the final third is given to those who are too poor to sacrifice an animal.  Therefore Bayrams are times for remembering obligations to God, for getting together with family and friends and for sharing with those less fortunate.

As with any country’s religious holidays, shops, businesses and services are either closed or operate reduced hours.  Importantly, around Marmaris the banks are closed from late afternoon on the 19th and reopen Monday the 24th.  Please be aware that  ATMs will not be refilled during this period.  In the marina several services will be closed but the office, bar, restaurant and supermarket will stay open.

NEWS:
John Smiths Extra Smooth Bitter Now on Sale in the
Yacht Marina Bar

FREE!!!!!!

32 page taxi share pullout inside!!!!

Sam and Poppy have left the marina. Yes, it is official. After weeks of hard work preparing Cindιk for the long trip to the Chagos Archipelago, they battled their way out of the Marmaris bay area through torrential rain, on Tuesday 11th December.

On Monday evening they were presented with a special banner made by the kids of Marmaris Yacht Marina, who were joined by the marina staff and other well-wishers.

Many readers will remember watching the John Pilger

documentary, “Stealing a  Nation” in Yacht Marina a few weeks ago and are now familiar with the struggle of the Chagossian people. Sam stood up afterwards, and moved us all with his reaction to the film. He told us of the self-funded voyage that he and his father are under-taking to highlight the plight of these gentle people.

The wholehearted and generous reaction of the vast majority of yotties overwhelmed Sam. He expressed emotional thanks in his own, inimitable style on the net just before he left.

Well done, Sam. You are a good man,

with a kind heart. We wish you success and fair winds.

We will be following Sam's adventures in Porthole, but for much more information and a constant update check out the website www.peoplesnavy.com, where you also have the opportunity to pledge support or sign up to the Virtual Navy.

The kids bid cindik farewell
