Fatehpur Sikri: City Of Victory

Jantar Mantar

[Jaipur, Rajasthan] If ever the sculptor Anish Kapoor received inspiration it must surely be from this ancient astronomy site, now a UNESCO World Heritage Centre. We admire the contours and angles of these intriguing objects before wandering round the impressive Amber Fort.

A remarkable group of scientific instruments, on a somewhat larger scale than others of that period, anywhere in the world. The Jaipur group put the solitary example in Delhi in the shade. It’s just a trifle inauthentic in that some of the instruments were brought in from elsewhere. Just one correction it’s a World Heritage Site, not a W H Centre. I like the Anish Kapoor analogy – I just wish I liked his work!
