After almost 2 years away from Blighty, I am due to return on Friday for a week to pick up all the boat bits which are impossible to come by in Montenegro (ie. all boat bits). I can't wait to see my friends, have a pint, smell green wet grass and be able to communicate fully with bus drivers (mmm) - but a large part of me is actually dreading being back in the fray again. Everything you have listed is just so true and is exactly why we left in the first place. It is even more obvious when you are away from it. And I haven't even got home yet!

The thought of getting on that National Express bus at Gatwick and crawling up to Nottingham on a Friday afternoon is really not that appealing.

And I've just found out that you can't take epoxy resin on the plane so I've gotta post it anyway (£90!!). Still cheaper than buying it in the Balkans though.

We are thinking Turkey for next winter. Living in the mountains here is not really perfect winter liveaboard territory, it has to be said!

All the best. Katie of s/y Monty B

Can agree with many of the comments about Britain.

We have so many good and civilised ways.

Are the bad things there? yes, but they probably were always there, just no so apparent.

Having worked overseas quite a lot, I was always pleased to come home.

Agreed, our climate is s**t. But then we dont get burnt down, have hurricanes, etc.

My winge is that you can't plan a weeks sail, or a nights barbeque.

All in all we have a lot to be grateful for.....

Except for that RBS bugger, and TB. I would hang both.

Just joking...

I have enjoyed your jottings, here and elsewhere.
This particular essay would make for a good, and interesting article in PBO or YM - have you tried them with it? Would be different from some of the drudge we have had recently!
I will be back in Fethiye, myself, from mid-March and hope our paths may cross.
Your web-site is very impressive as well (I will be looking for some tips).

                   Cheers,
                          Stewart H Kinsman.

Agree entirely we fell in love with Fethiye when we arrived there from Marmaris - you can keep Marmaris and all the bars and discos. And yes the Tuesday and Saturday markets sell veg to die for (and Im a carnivor!) I know lots of people and businesses in Fethiye if you need something I probably know where you can find it.

You will get a good paint brush in the DIY shop/engineers supplier next to the Citron Garage - on the road to the Migros supermarket.

You are absolutely right, Jamie, this is very difficult to decide. I had been chatting away with an ex-colleague of about 25 years ago today, while it was heavily raining here in M. and sunshine and mild climate where she is in the South of Germany, funny. But sunshine or not: Job-problems, costs of living and so on. There is no conclusion to this. We do not miss the world way back "home", are happy where we are, but where is our security? Which one is the better world? We don t know or do we?
